While on our merry way through beautiful New Hampshire, we decided to stop at the infamous Blood Cemetery. The stories surrounding this cemetery range from screaming voices to orbs to whatever else anyone’s imagination can conjure up.
Warning: I may resort to name calling…..
The cemetery is nicknamed Blood Cemetery because there is a family plot whose last name was unfortunately Blood. I say unfortunately because when one has a cool name, it tends to be a magnet for imbeciles who have no respect. That’s correct, there was no bloodshed, no war or argument or terrible murder or crime. Just a last name.
I walked up the hill to the family plot only to find the unsightly evidence of vandals who have shattered the peace the deceased should have a right too. While reading the stones and trying to determine who is who amidst the destruction, I could see someone over my right shoulder. I didn’t turn to look since I knew that no one was there. I pulled out my freshly charged camera and turned it on only to find the battery icon blinking. I managed to get a couple of photos before having to switch to my phone.
But who were the Bloods?
Elnathan Blood was the first Blood to settle in this small town. He was born in the next town over, married his love, Elizabeth and became a farmer. He fought in the French and Indian War in 1757 then went back to plowing the fields and making an honest living for himself. He also served as a town selectman for a time. While his wife’s grave is nothing to scoff at, Elnathan doesn’t seem to have a stone at all. Maybe the vandals destroyed that one as well.
Several rumors surround the Bloods, however none of them hold any weight. One such rumor is Abel Blood was dabbling in the occult and was therefore cursed to haunt the cemetery for all eternity. Let me stop you right there….According to historical documents the Bloods were a church going, devout Christian family who were cursed with nothing more than a cool name.
BUT because that’s not enough, we are also going to crap on the existence of this poor family by just not putting up a stone at all anymore. That’s right, someone who has been deceased since the mid 1800’s can’t even have a stone because humanity took a huge hairpin turn that led straight into Taint Blossom Territory.
The vandals who come here trying to summon the dead or whatever the heck they’re doing think nothing of destroying someone’s final resting place. I will also add that when you destroyed Abel’s stone, and continue to disturb his grave, you are also vandalizing the grave of a three year old little boy. So….this takes you from being a pile of garbage to an entire trash heap. Shame on you. Yes, Abel and his wife Betsy, had a boy who died at three years old. I would say that is enough of a curse for these poor people.
Abel’s parents are also buried here. His father, who was also named Abel has had his tombstone broken in half while his mother, Sarah has also been toppled. (the answer is no before you decide to get argumentative, it’s not from being old. It’s vandalism.)
Then we have Sally Blood, who was the wife of Willard Blood. I’m not sure what she did to people but her stone is busted and tampered with and probably more exhausted now then she ever was on this plain. She died of the measles when she was 46 by the way….why the Hell are you messing with her stone?
Another rumor surrounding this cemetery being haunted is the fact that an entire family was murdered one night, including a little boy who had escaped at first but was shot and killed as he ran down the road for help. I’m not sure what this has to do with the Blood’s since all one has to do is look at the dates on the stones (or if some Dingleberry has destroyed the stones, then do a bit of research) to discover that no entire family died in the same year, so that one was easy enough to debunk. It may be a different family in the cemetery, but it is said that the little boy continues to haunt the road the cemetery is on, although there are no documents to back this up.
The final rumor is that on Abel, Betsy and little George’s grave stone, there was a hand on the top of the stone with a finger pointing up at the sky. At night, this finger turns to point down to the ground. So, since this hand is etched in stone, I am going to go out on a limb here and say this one is also false. But we will never know for sure, since this family isn’t allowed to have a stone anymore.
So, in short, the rumors about the Bloods are false. It’s just a name. Is the cemetery haunted? Yes it is. But it doesn’t have anything to do with the Bloods. They just caught the heat because of their unfortunate name. I walk back to the car, all the while knowing someone was watching from a specific area of the cemetery. When I got back to the car I realized my phone had gone from nearly full to 27% in the short time I had been visiting the cemetery, and my car locks wouldn’t work. I would press on the key fob to unlock the doors only to have them lock again right away after unlocking them. This happened several times before I actually said out loud “could I get in my car please?” I made it a point to tell those who may want to tag along that they needed to stay behind and not follow me out. (Trust me, you need to do this if you spend any time in cemeteries).
Cameras have been installed all along the cemetery and it is heavily patrolled by police due to the constant disrespect, so before you write to me in a huff to tell me “I think it’s just from being old. People wouldn’t do a thing like that…or kids will be kids…” save it and write to the police who have to keep eyes on the area. They’d probably appreciate the fact that you know more than them.
