UNCLE KALER

Wizard, Weather Enthuiast, Hopeless Romantic

This is a story about a wizard who lived in Central Maine. He wasn’t just any wizard though; he was a sucker for fools in love. He specialized in weather sorcery and was well known for his magical talents. That’s why I am led to believe he must have been over the moon on one particular night when a young couple appeared on his doorstep, begging for his help.

You see, the young man and woman were off to Augusta to be married, however, the woman’s parents were not fond of this idea and were frantically chasing the couple down. They were gaining ground and no telling what they would do to the young man once they caught them. When Uncle Kaler opened the door to his isolated home on Louden Hill and heard the young couple begging for his help, he likely thought this was his moment to shine.

Uncle Kaler knew exactly what to do. He presented the young couple with a bag and instructed them to go down the road a ways before opening it. The bag contained the ingredients needed for a storm that would indeed slow their pursuers down and wash away the scent the many hound dogs relied on.

The couple left and Uncle Kaler sat back in his chair waiting for the storm to hit. Not only did the storm hit, but a flash of lightening and loud crack of thunder churned across the sky, loud enough to wake the old wizard back into reality. The heavens opened and the rain whisked around as the wind blew a gale around the man’s cottage.

Uncle Kaler immediately realized he had likely used a little too much gusto in his magic spell in his hopes to see the lovely young couple get away. The next morning he woke to find a huge piece of the ledge had broken away from the earth and into the Kennebec River. This rock is known today to locals as Mill Rock and is living proof that if two people are in love nothing will stop them, not even overbearing in-laws.
